You are here: Home > Book Reviews > Galapagos Book Review Welcome to the Galapagos by Kurt Vonnegut Review page: Kurt Vonnegut's Galapagos may well be his best novel. I can proudly say that I have read Cat's Cradle, Welcome to the Monkey House, Slaughterhouse 5, God Bless you Mr. Rosewater, and Breakfast of Champions. Of all the Vonnegut book that I have read, Galapagos is the most interesting and funny. Galapagos starts out as a few characters going on "the nature Cruise of the Century". Our narrator Leon Trotsky Trout (Killgore Trout's (science fiction writer) son) takes us back 1 million years to 1986 A.D. We are led on an evolutionary voyage through which human life is wiped out, all except for a select few who are settlers on the Galapagos archipelago. Vonnegut more importantly questions the human race: are our great big brains really necessary, or will the laws of natural selection make them smaller? Even if you haven't read any Kurt Vonnegut books, Galapagos is a great book to start. Galapagos WILL make you think, possibly even use your brain (maybe). You do not have to be a lover of Biology to enjoy Galapagos. I aver that Kurt Vonnegut is really like the postmodern Mark Twain. His satiric view on our modern world is not only facetious, but also sometimes true. Galapagos makes for a great read, and many laughs. Pick up a copy of Vonnegut's Galapagos Book!
